Obituary of Debra Jean Benson

Debra (Debbie) Jean Benson, age 65, passed away on December 25, 2024, at her home in Licking, Missouri. She was born on September 11, 1959, to Donald and Bonnie (Lewis) Benson. Debbie is preceded in death by her mother, Bonnie and grandparents, Bud and Helen Benson and Dayton and Leota Lewis. She is survived by her father, Donald Benson of Licking; Benny (Kelly) Bean of Success, Sharon Greathouse of Success, David (Tracy) Benson of Mountain Grove, Linda (Scott) Huff of Licking, Randy (Melissa) Lewis of Licking, Ronny (Tena) Lewis of Licking; as well as numerous extended family and friends. While growing up, Debbie and her two cousins, Randy and Ronny (who she thought of as brothers), could routinely be found together. As adults, this strong bond continued and carried over to their children; Ginger Smith, Tim Lewis, Chase Lewis, Colton Lewis, and Desiree Fell. Debbie graduated from Licking High School in 1977 and continued her education at Southwest Missouri State University (SMS) where she graduated in 1981 with a degree in elementary education. Upon graduation, Debbie returned to her hometown of Licking and immediately accepted a position at Licking Elementary teaching kindergarten. Debbie loved teaching kindergarten so much that continued in this capacity for 31 years! Her students remember her for the Big Space Rocket that her father made for her classroom. The positive impact she made on the lives of her students continues today. Debbie was a member of the Licking Church of Christ. She was baptized at an early age and continued to be a faithful follower of God. Upon her retirement in 2012, Debbie devoted her time to her yard and flowers. You could find her tending to both throughout the year. Debbie also enjoyed spending time with her father. She and her father rarely missed an evening meal eaten together. This was quality time spent reflecting on the day’s happenings. Debbie was a dutiful daughter, cousin, and friend. She will be greatly missed by all that knew her.
