Daryl was my best friend in grade school and high school. I have so many memories of him and some of the crazy things we used to do. We would go skinny-dipping in one of my uncles pond and in Jack’s Fork River Daryl and my brother and me were swimming in Jack’s Fork, when we got busted by a family that came down with their children to swim. Our clothes were on the gravel bar! I think one of the most memorable times with Daryl was when we lived in town there in Summersville. We were going to go squirrel hunting across the road from the house . I was showing Daryl how to use the single shot shotgun that my brother had. I was showing him how to load it which was a huge mistake. I said once you get the shell in it, all you have to do is pull the barrel up and lock it Into the frame, then pull the hammer back and pull the trigger. Before I could say anymore, he did just that, shot through three bedroom doors upstairs and blew the window out in the front of the house. My mother came running up the stairs to see what was going on , we were both standing there with our chins on our chest when she got there. Boy did we ever get in trouble that time. We both got a whipping by my dad. Then there was the time when Daryl, my brother Gary and I were sitting on a small creek bank smoking cigarettes. Yeah we were a little young for that, probably all of 14 years old. My brother says I wonder how fast that grass would burn if I was to set it on fire. I told him a lot faster than any of us can run. He bent over flicked his bic and away it went. We all three jerked our shirts off and soaked them in the pool of water in front of us, and took off, trying to beat the flames out with no success. It got out on the neighbor, and they had to call the conservation which brought out a dozer and put it out after it had burned off several acres. Daryl headed home after that. He wanted to miss the meeting with our father. Lol. He told me a few days later that he was going to have to stop hanging out with me and my brother! He was a great friend and will be missed by many.
